Sunny Chen
Actor | Writer | Director (emerging)
Sunny Chen 陈珊妮 is a Chinese immigrant settler on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tseil-Waututh lands, and wears many hats, including director, actor, writer, and community organizer. Sunny's pronouns are she/her and they/them, and their ancestors are from Si-Chuan and Hu-Bei. They hold a BA in psychology and English literature, and commit to healing (for) our community.
As someone who grew up in a low-income immigrant family with intergenerational trauma, Sunny understands the importance of self-care, genuine connection, collaboration and belonging, especially in this capitalist industry. She continues to learn from and pay respect to Black and Indigenous women and Two-Spirit, and recognizes their own privilege as a light-skinned East Asian settler, in terms of white proximity.
Sunny is determined to use their privilege to advocate for others, and created Open Ethnicity series to further this collective purpose. The film industry has always been male- and white-dominated, and it's time to let Black, Indigenous, and racialized women and nonbinary people of colour lead.
