As an Afghan-Canadian writer, I began my career as a filmmaker by writing and directing episodic dramas for Tolo TV and Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) in Afghanistan. My feature documentary, In The Rumbling Belly of Motherland, was nominated for a 2021 DGC award. It won the best feature at the 2021 Reelworld film festival. I was also awarded the Outstanding Producer award at Reelworld for 2021. My CBC short doc, Fatima In Kabul, was also nominated for the 2021 Canadians Screen Awards and a 2022 Banff Rockie Award. It won three Leo Awards too.

I've learned a lot through my residency at the 2022 CFC Writers' Lab resident, where I further developed the dramatic feature Sama’s Here There and the eye for an eye dystopian eye tale - Aisha. Whether directing or writing, I’m drawn to stories that raise questions about framed and formed identities and the conflicts which arise because of our obligation and allegiance to these identities - And our struggle to break free from them. I'm currently part of the 2023 WIDC (Women In The Director Chair) program and developing the series Afghan Smoke through Reelworld E20 TV Writers Lab.

I’m a member of the DGC, WGC, and Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
