I love making happy work that solves serious problems.
In a world where filmmakers of colour are still pushed hard to perform our trauma for a shot at being heard, I think positivity and joy are radical acts of resistance. The world I live in is one where trauma and pain and absolute joy and hilarity all live together in real time.
Because we’re all just comical messes trying to do our best. And if we tell authentic, honest, hilarious stories about it, the world can be a more authentic, honest, hilarious place.
As a narrative writer-director, I’m currently excited to be working with Telefilm and the Indigenous Screen Office to develop narrative feature comedies with authentic South Asian and Muslim characters.
And I bring all the same energy and passion to my commercial directing work: examining who our storytelling centers, and re-framing the picture to elevate how under-represented audiences see the world and their place in it.
As a co-founder of Dunya Media, I produce projects with a focus on empowering storytellers of colour to tell stories with joy and purpose.
