My name is Rohit Ajitkumar, I am from southern part of India. The first thing that attracted to moving images was how I was enjoying watching cartoons, and later found out it’s called animation. At my 10th grade, I decided I want to study that and after lots of convincing with my parents, I joined Manipal University ( India ), for my Bachelor’s in Animation, where I studied the whole process right from hand drawn animation using the light box frame by frame to 3d animation.
While learning I found my profound interest towards photography, and I started learning that from my friend. I started clicking pictures, eventually ended up hosting 3 photography exhibitions is various metro cities in India. I also did a bunch of short films and I did a documentary photo series with some of my friends and my Professor. This is when I realized there is something called cinematography which excited me even more, because watching a frame through a camera made me happy. So, I thought of studying even more, so after graduating from Manipal Uni I came to VFS for 1 year of Film Production.
I learnt a lot about the history of cinema, technical and aesthetic language even though the course fee was very expensive I trusted my gut. During an Oscar party back in 2014, I met a I die producer and through him I started working on a short film by volunteering. Later on I went to school again to study business at Langara College while working part time in the film business. I joined IATSE 891 in 2016 as a Grip and that’s when I met a very cool super talented crew on Dead Pool 2, and to be honest I went there as a day call on such a massive set at Riverview. It was a thing, since I was nervous but still stoked. I made good connections and did few movies with the same crew up until this year on Jurassic World. Last year I joined the ICG 669 union as a camera trainee and now I am on my 5th rotation on Big Sky. I want to do one more rotation on a Feature after this before I can upgrade and start working as a 2nd AC.
